Roll Model® Method Self Myofascial Release

Ever been at home or at work, and find yourself feeling tight or sore and wish you didn’t have to wait until your next massage appointment to sort it out?  It’s super frustrating, I know! Well guess what, you are in the right place!

The Roll Model® Method is a self care practice. It is a form of self myofascial release which utilises tools in the form of grippy rubber balls, to allow you to self-treat and massage areas in your body that are feeling tight, sore or even just uncomfortable and lacking ease of movement.  The practice utilises these therapy balls as part of a movement sequence, which includes a check in at the start, and a re-check at the end, so you can measure the changes in your body that occur as a result of this work. It may also incorporate breath techniques

It can be used to free up tight tissues in the body, as well as provide hydration and glide to areas that have not been moving well.  It is even beneficial for reducing stress levels and improving sleep, in those who tend to spend a lot of time in high-stress mode.

This practice also helps to create more awareness of your body - it connects your mind back into your body, allows you to discover areas that may have been “asleep”, switched off or even just forgotten about.  By bringing attention to these areas, you start to re-create awareness and reconnection, switching these areas back on which is a key aspect of movement and sensation!  This can have a knock on effect as it means that the muscles that have been overworked (to pick up the slack) can go back to doing what they should be doing, which eases tension and pain.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION?

Roll Model® Method SMFR sessions are one on one sessions in clinic, where you will be taken through a custom sequence specific to your needs using the Therapy Balls. This may be a sequence based on the postural or movement patterns that we have been working on in a clinic setting (homework to support your SI or remedial massage appointments), it may be based on a requirement for performance in your chosen sport (as a pre/post workout routine), or it may be a sequence that is designed to counteract any work related postural patterns you might have (such as sitting at a computer all day). It may even be a gentle sequence designed to wind you down from stressful days and help you sleep. The session is fully customised to your needs to ensure you get the most benefit out of working with the Therapy Balls in your chosen setting, wherever that may be!

In addition to customised sequences, you will also be given techniques that might be helpful as spot treatment for sore or tight muscles, whether at work or at home, so that you are able to self treat your pain or tension problems as you need to. Ultimately this will allow you to take control of your physical (and mental) health and wellbeing, and re-connect you with your body.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

You may have already heard about various self myofascial release tools available such as foam rollers, spiky balls or hard lacrosse style balls.

What is special about the Roll Model® Therapy Balls is that they’re specifically made with a grippy surface, and have various degrees of “give” to them. This allows them to lock into the tissues of the body and create shear and glide in to the various layers of fascia, which is what can help reduce pain and improve range of motion.

The pliability of the balls means that you can find the right amount of sensation without taking it too high on the pain scale - many of the firmer tools can cause “bracing” or holding of the breath which is counter intuitive to release. One of the key principles of this practice and the therapy balls is that “it doesn't have to hurt to work”! The balls come in a range of sizes and are portable meaning you can take them with you wherever you need.
